Maxima Marketing’s President and Chief Creative Officer, Debbi Karpowicz Kickham, is an expert-level and natural-born communications and marketing professional. She began her marketing and promotions career sending press releases about herself to her local newspaper when she was just a high school student.
Ms. Kickham would confess, however, that her career began even earlier when she was in the 8th grade at St. Ann’s School in Devon, Connecticut, when she entered her school’s oratorical contest. To qualify, a student first had to write a speech, then progress to a finalist in the competition, and finally present the speech on stage to the entire school.
On the day that she learned about the contest, Ms. Kickham decided then and there that she would was going to win—and she did! Her speech about “Family Unity In Our Changing Times” was sponsored by a national association, and she captured first prize back in 1969 (along with her picture in local newspapers). This success led her to a lifetime of writing and speaking engagements.
Ms. Kickham is a current and veteran member of the Society of American Travel Writers. A professional travel journalist for more than 25 years, she has crisscrossed the globe throughout her communications career, writing travel articles for a wealth of magazines and newspapers that include The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Glamour, Cigar Aficionado, InStyle Weddings, Bridal Guide (Contributing Editor to the Travel Section), BellaOnline (Hawaii and Spas Editor), For The Bride, Destination I Do, Caviar Affair, WellesleyWeston, US Airways Magazine, Continental, GateHouse Media, Porthole Cruise Magazine, Simply The Best, First for Women—including custom-published magazines for ITT Sheraton and the Ritz-Carlton. Ms. Kickham was also the “Passionate Collector” columnist for the custom-published magazine, Sotheby’s Domain.
As a former Editor of Robb Report magazine, Ms. Kickham was the magazine’s on-air Corporate Media Spokesperson, making appearances at diverse regional and national media such as Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee, and the CBS Morning News. She also created the magazine’s signature tagline at the time, “The Magazine For People With Million-Dollar Taste.” Her warm, bubbly personality, and business savvy also led her to become the national on-air media spokesperson for other businesses, including AT&T, Sure Fit Slipcovers (exclusively on Home Shopping Network, HSN), PersonalShopper.com and Velcro USA.
Ms. Kickham is the author of three published books. Her first book, I Love Men in Tasseled Loafers: Or How to Judge a Man by His Shoes, was published in 1988 by Quinlan Press. Ms. Kickham singlehandedly marketed and promoted the book, including sending the book to the media in Allen Edmonds shoe boxes, with press releases rolled up and tied with actual leather laces with tassels.
Her second book, Off The Wall Marketing Ideas: Jumpstart Your Sales Without Busting Your Budget, was co-written with friend Nancy Michaels, and published by Adams Media in 2000. The book made The Boston Globe’s Bestseller List in just 11 days after publication, and led Ms. Kickham to appearances on a wealth of media including CNN, National Public Radio, and articles about her in scores of publications that include Entrepreneur Magazine and Investor’s Business Daily.
Ms. Kickham’s third published book, The Globetrotter’s Get-Gorgeous Guide: Diet and Beauty Secrets of Travel and Beauty Pros, Traveling Executives and Celebrity Travelers (Outskirts Press), is the world’s first beauty book for traveling women. Ms. Kickham spent two years writing this book, which she describes as the ultimate “Tour of Beauty.”
Ms. Kickham was also the Contributing Travel Editor and Contributing Spa Editor at JustLuxe, the leading luxury website on the internet. (She has never met a luxury she didn’t like, with the exception of Thai massage.)
Ms. Kickham is the owner of Maxima Marketing™ in Westwood, Massachusetts, and provides marketing consulting and website content creation and development to clients in a wide variety of industries and professions, with an emphasis on the beauty industry and the cosmetic/aesthetic professions. Working with plastic surgeons, cosmetic dentists, hair salons and skin care salons, she develops and masterminds communications and social media marketing strategies that include developing unusual story angles; creating social media marketing plans and signature product and service taglines; writing press releases, ads and newsletters; copywriting; media placement, and product naming.
When she is not traveling the globe, getting spa treatments, shopping for bargains, writing marketing proposals and travel articles, exercising, buying cosmetics, and finding the humor in everyday life, Ms. Kickham is watching movies, reading voraciously, flirting with her handsome husband Bill, and studying Combat Sambo (Russian martial arts), where she is an orange belt.
